HISTORY OF SAN MIGUEL

San Miguel, being once a part of the municipality of Bato was first inhabited by the early mountaineers and part of the Malayan who were pushed to the open valley with the coming of the Spanish Colonizers. This was already in the middle part of the 18th century and the pioneer family settled in the Poblacion believed to be the scion of Garpia Tapel’s family, Esteban Tabirao and other unknown migrant. The area is covered by thick virgin forest. The advent of Spanish colonization motivated more families to settle in the open valleys for safety and better habitation. From the Poblacion, inhabitants and migrants settled along the rivers and lakes by cluster up north, which become now the sitios and barangays comprising the municipality.

GEOGRAPHY OF SAN MIGUEL

The municipality of San Miguel is located at the mid-south section of the province of Catanduanes. It is bounded on the north by the municipality of Viga, on the east by the municipalities of Baras and Gigmoto, on the west by the municipality of Caramoran, and on the southwest by the municipalities of San Andres and Virac, and on the south by the municipality of Bato. It is twelve (12) kilometers away form Virac, the capital town of the province.

Municipality of San Andres (Calolbon)

In the late 16th Century, Calolbon was already an established and recognized municipality. Its official name was however changed by the virtue of Republic Act No. 3948, approved on June 18, 1964 entitled—An Act Renaming Calolbon to San Andres. Incidentally, the town’s patron saint is Saint Andrew the Apostle, and the town’s feast day—November 30, coincides with the birthday of the famous Filipino hero Andres Bonificacio.
