Municipality of Virac

Virac, the capital of the island province of Catanduanes, started its primitive annals in pre-Spanish times when tribal chieftain Lumibao, scion of Datu Dumaguil who came to the Philippines with the 13 Malay datus, and his wife Milbigan settled near Vidak spring and founded the first civilized settlement with a score of servant followers and their wives. Some say Virac is a derivation of the word “Vidac” while others claim it is a contraction of the Spanish version of the word burac, meaning flower.

HISTORY OF VIRAC

When the Spaniards set foot on the shore of Catanduanes, Virac was a small community led by Datu Lumibao and his wife Milbigan. Their eldest son Macacao lived at the bank of a nearby spring. Spanish Conquistador Juan de Salcedo had first brought a Galleon Trade to Catanduanes waters in 1573. His purpose was to capture and punish the pirates for their nefarious activities in Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, and Western Catanduanes.

GEOGRAPHY OF VIRAC

Geographical Location. The municipality of Virac is situated at about 13.3 degrees north latitude and 124.2 degrees east longitude. It is bounded on the east by the municipality of Bato and Cabugao Bay and by the Lagonoy Gulf on its southern geographical fringes. On its northern tips lies the municipality of Caramoran. The northeastern section is shared with the Municipality of San Miguel, while the western boundary abuonds the municipality of San Andres.

Municipality of Viga

Viga is located in the northeastern portion and almost in the heart of the Province of Catanduanes. It is nestled in one of the widest plain of the island. Three (3) neighboring towns and the Philippine sea bound the area. On the north is the town of Panganiban, on the east is the Philippine Sea that merges with the vast Pacific Ocean, on the south is the town of Gigmoto and the west is the town of Caramoran. It is about 52 kilometers away from the capital town of Virac passing through the zigzagging national highways.

HISTORY OF VIGA

The site of the original settlement of Viga was believed to be at the sitio Cavi-gae, now called Small Viga. It was believed that a group of tribesman led by one “Abines” from the mainland was the first settlers. Lader, due to frequent “moro” depredations, they fled inlnd and settled in a place where the primitive inhabitants are akin to the pygmies. They called this place Oco that means short people or dwarf. When the moros stopped their plundering, they moved to the lowlands where the soil was more fertile. They selected an area wherein herbaceous giant-like plants, which they called “Marviga” abundantly grows. The settlers were a mixed stock, a result of the intermarriages between the natives and migrating tribes.
